The Clarke Foley Community Hub has announced announce the launch of a new outside Chatty Bench, courtesy of specialist housing and care provider Anchor, which aims to foster conversation and community spirit, particularly among older adults who may be at risk of loneliness.
The installation of the Chatty Bench sign at Clarke Foley is part of Anchor’s nationwide initiative to create safe, welcoming spaces that encourage social interaction. The bench, marked by a colourful sign, invites everyone to sit down and chat, making it a powerful tool in the fight against isolation.
In a recent photo taken outside the Clarke Foley Hub, Lauren Smith, Wellbeing Lead for Anchor, and Dorothy Powell, a retired scheme manager for Anchor and now a dedicated volunteer at Clarke Foley, are seen sitting together on the bench. Their warm smiles and engaging conversation embody the bench's purpose: to bring people together.
"The Chatty Bench is more than just a place to sit; it's a place to connect,"
said Lauren Smith.
"At Anchor, we know how much a simple conversation can brighten someone’s day, particularly for those in later life who might not have as many opportunities to engage with others. By bringing this bench to the Clarke Foley Hub, we hope to create a space where community members feel encouraged to reach out and chat."
Dorothy Powell, who has been volunteering at Clarke Foley since her retirement, added,
"I’ve seen firsthand the positive impact these benches have and I’m thrilled to see one here at Clarke Foley. It’s a wonderful way to bring people together, and I’m looking forward to many conversations with the people of Ilkley."
The Clarke Foley, already a hub for community activities and social engagement, is the ideal location for this initiative. The Chatty Bench complements the centre’s mission to enhance the well-being of Ilkley residents by providing opportunities for connection and support. Residents and visitors are encouraged to take a seat on the Chatty Bench and enjoy a conversation with someone new.
