The Grove Bookshop is hosting an evening with two historians next month, Caroline Burt and Richard Partington.
The co-authors of Arise, England: Six Kings and the Making of a State will be in conversation at the bookshop from 7pm on Thursday, 2 October. Their previous events have sold out, so organisers recommend to book early to avoid disappointment.
Arise, England has had some great reviews. Helen Castor (historian and author of The Eagle and the Hart) described it as 'An absorbing and eye-opening account of what the Plantagenets did for us.' According to Dan Jones (historian, author and podcaster), 'Burt and Partington show precisely and engagingly why the Middle Ages Matter.'
The book explores the period between 1199 and 1399 - a time of high drama in English politics. These two centuries witnessed savage political blood-letting - including civil war, deposition, the murder of kings and the ruthless execution of rebel lords - as well as international warfare, a devastating national pandemic, economic crisis and the first major peasant uprising in English history. Arise, England uses the six Plantagenet kings who ruled during this turbulent time to explore England's emergent statehood.

Caroline Burt and Richard Partington [above] are admissions tutors at the University of Cambridge (Pembroke and St John's. This event may be of particular interest to budding history students, looking to study history at university and beyond.
Anyone wishing to attend can book by Eventbrite or the bookshop website.
