Ilkley u3a help ease transition to retirement

When the time for retirement finally arrives, many people wonder what comes next. But for those living around these parts, there’s a vibrant way to keep learning, staying active and meeting new friends, all thanks to Ilkley & District u3a.

This is a friendly, welcoming organisation for people no longer in full-time work who want to keep their minds and bodies engaged. Far from being a quiet retirement club, it’s a thriving community built on curiosity, companionship and shared interests.

One long-standing member said:

“Retirement isn’t the end of work — it’s the start of a new kind of learning,”

With many different interest groups covering everything from walking and photography to history, art, science, and singing, there’s something for everyone. The groups are relaxed and informal — no exams, no pressure, just people sharing what they know and learning from one another.

Many members say it’s the friendships and sense of belonging that make u3a so rewarding. Whether you’ve lived in the area for decades or just moved here to be close to family, you’ll find a warm welcome and a chance to connect.

Members can take part in as many groups as they like, volunteer to help with events, or even start a new group around personal interest. It’s a great way to stay purposeful and involved in the community.

The annual membership fee is only a few pounds, making it one of the most affordable ways to enrich your retirement years. Small group venue costs are shared among participants.

To find out more visit the Ilkley & District u3a website ilkleyu3a.org or call into a drop-in session, held at the Clarke Foley Community Hub on 1st and 3rd Friday mornings of each month.
