The countdown has begun for one of the most exciting evenings in Ilkley’s calendar – the Ilkley Cycle Races, taking place this year on Friday 4th July, and organisers are urging local residents to get involved by volunteering to help bring the event to life.
From elite competitors in the National Circuit Series to rising stars in the junior races, the Ilkley Cycle Races attract hundreds of cyclists and thousands of spectators from across Yorkshire and beyond. The event, which winds through the heart of Ilkley’s town centre, has become a hallmark of community celebration, athleticism, and Yorkshire grit.

But behind every successful race evening is an army of local volunteers, and this year’s organisers are putting out the call for enthusiastic, community-minded individuals to join the team.
“This event simply can’t happen without the help of our volunteers,”
said Volunteer Coordinator Chris Hack.
“From set-up throughout the afternoon to helping clear the barriers at the end of the night, the dedication of our volunteers is what keeps the Ilkley Cycle Races safe, exciting, and running like clockwork.”
A Variety of Roles for All Abilities
There are dozens of ways to get involved – no cycling or volunteer experience required. Volunteers are needed for roles including:
-
Course Marshals – helping to manage key corners and crossings to ensure rider and spectator safety
-
Event Set-Up & Pack-Down Crew – assisting with barrier placement, signage, and clean-up
-
Sign-On Desk Support – helping riders check in and receive their race numbers
-
Spectator Stewards – providing directions, handing out programs, answering questions, and helping maintain a positive atmosphere
-
Media & Marketing – taking photos and videos of the races and evenings activities
Shifts are available throughout the day and evening, and volunteers are free to sign up for as much or as little time as they can spare. For many, volunteering at the Ilkley Cycle Races is about more than just lending a hand – it’s about being part of a shared community experience.
Returning volunteer Helen W said:
“Volunteering was one of the highlights of my summer last year. The atmosphere was incredible, and it felt great to contribute to such an exciting event!”
