Ilkley artists Helen Brayshaw and Lucia Smith are coming together for a second Art in the Kitchen event this weekend.
Both artists love the Yorkshire moors and portray them often in their work. For both, colour is pivotal. So it is surprising how very different their approach to colour is!
Helen pours her paint onto canvas; an intriguing, unique approach where colour accuracy is crucial. It is our recognition of her carefully chosen palette of soft moorland hues that connects us with the familiar moorland place.
Her paintings vibrate with energy from the very act of pouring and from our fascination in how the paint flows; it is mesmerising.
In contrast, Lucia plays and augments the colour, as it is her careful observation and drawing that connects us with the location, as Lucia explains:
"Once the structure is in place, I enjoy using colour to suggest a mood. Often a vibrant, uplifting palette, to which I add flashes of vivid pink or bright green to celebrate the joy of the vista, or the feel of the wind in your hair!"
Both artists agree that it is intriguing to contrast their different approaches and are delighted to present their work together.
Lucia adds:
"We hope that our joy and love for the moors will be tangible in the air."
It’s an exciting combination for an equally intriguing venue: they are exhibiting at the Thomas Darcey Kitchen and Home Design showroom, easy to find on Wells Rd. It’s a special opportunity to meet both artists, chat about their work, their love of the moors and maybe start your Christmas shopping.
All are welcome at this second Art In The Kitchen event on Saturday 29th November 5pm – 8pm and Sunday 30th November 11am – 4pm at Thomas Darcey Showroom, Wells Rd, Ilkley.
