Ilkley Manor House is opening its doors for two special weekends of free family-friendly fun and historical tours on 13–14 and 20–21 September.
Explore the Heritage Open Days 2025 theme of Architecture through the fascinating history of this Grade I-listed medieval building, which stands on the site of a Roman fort.
Children’s crafts will run throughout both weekends. On 13–14 September, young visitors can build their own mini Manor House while learning about its construction and the people who once lived there.
On 20–21 September, families can recreate the Roman fort of Olicana and explore life in Roman Ilkley. Children will also have the chance to dress up in medieval and Roman costumes, and play with traditional toys, including the dollhouse recreation of Ilkley Manor House. These sessions are free and do not require booking.
Guided tours and talks will offer deeper insights into the site’s rich heritage. On Sunday 14 September at 2pm and Saturday 20 September at 10:30am, local expert Alex Cockshott will lead tours of the Manor House, highlighting its architectural features and layered history.
On Saturday 20 September at 2pm, historian John Cockshott will guide visitors through the story of the Roman fort, exploring its context, features, and the ongoing debate about Ilkley’s Latin name. The tour includes a discussion about Ilkley Manor House’s nationally significant Roman collection, including the renowned Verbeia altar stones and the tombstone of Romano-British woman Vedica.
Please book for the tours via ilkleymanorhouse.org, or visit us at Ilkley Manor House, Castle Yard, LS29 9DT on weekends from 11am to 4pm to book in person.
