This recital is all English, by Frank Bridge (Benjamin Britten’s most important teacher), by Sir Arthur Bliss, who was Master of the Queen’s Musick from 1953 until his death in 1975, and by Christopher Rathbone, Director of Music at St Margaret's.
More Information (Your Ilkley is not responsible for external websites)
Three lovely pieces by Bridge show him in his youth, in 1905, before his music became astringent enough to appeal to the young Britten. Christopher's variation set on ‘Dundee’ has a string of very short variations, followed by three more extended homages to Bach, Messiaen and Flor Peeters. The Praeludium by Bliss (1971) has three extended sections, and originally had parts for three or four percussion players; Christopher recorded it in 1979 with a team of percussionists at Marlborough College. It is however perfectly satisfactory as a piece for solo organ. Free entry. Retiring collection in support of St Margaret's Organ Restoration Fund. All welcome.
