Baton for Yorkshire passes through Ilkley

The Baton for Yorkshire with the Ilkley Yorkshire Cancer Research shop team

The Baton for Yorkshire arrived in Ilkley this week, part of We Walk for Yorkshire, the annual walking fundraising campaign from Yorkshire Cancer Research.

Setting off from Hull at the start of May, the baton will travel across 35 Yorkshire locations throughout the month, carried by people with cancer, researchers and charity supporters, in recognition of the 35,000 people diagnosed with cancer in Yorkshire each year.

On Monday, Ilkley Yorkshire Cancer Research shop manager Shindo Kaur-Mold had the honor of taking the baton around Ilkley and commented:

"Today, I was incredibly proud to join some of our wonderful volunteers in carrying the Baton around Ilkley’s landmarks for our part of its journey. It was a really special moment to be involved in something that means so much to so many across Yorkshire.

"We are also fundraising through Yorkshire Cancer Research’s page - We Walk for Yorkshire campaign under the name The Ilkley Grovers, and every donation will help support life-saving research. As Shop Manager, I feel deeply passionate about the role we play in our shops to raise vital funds."

Dr Kathryn Scott, Chief Executive at Yorkshire Cancer Research, said:

"The Baton for Yorkshire is a visible reminder of the progress made possible thanks to pioneering research but the work that still needs to be done. Every person who carries the baton plays a vital role in the charity’s life-saving mission to find new and better ways to prevent, diagnose and treat cancer in Yorkshire."
