One of Yorkshire and England’s greatest ever amateur golfers, Rodney Foster, will be at The Grove Bookshop on Saturday 6 June.
Rodney will be at the shop on The Grove from 3pm to sign copies of Golf’s Golden Era, a star-studded biography written by local author Robin Snook.
The book features reflections on some of the greats of golf, including Arnold Palmer, Gary Player and Lee Trevino, and has a foreword by Tony Jacklin CBE, former UK and US Open champion.
Rodney played in golf’s golden era of the 1960s and 1970s when respect, sportsmanship and friendship were so highly valued. This biography has details of his amazing playing career and accolades, which include being a five time winner of the Yorkshire Amateur Championship and ten time winner of the Bradford Open. He had junior and senior caps for England between 1960 and 1973, before becoming the non playing captain of England in the Home Internationals 1976, 1977 and 1978.
He also won the most valued amateur titles of his day: the European Amateur Team Championship three times, the Berkshire Trophy 1964 and the Lytham Trophy in 1967 and 1968, and the English Amateur Stroke Play Championship, The Brabazon Trophy twice.
On the wider international stage Rodney played in the Masters 1966, numerous Open Championships and the World Team Championship. He played in the Walker Cup five times including the most famous GB and Ireland victory over the USA of all time in 1971 at St Andrews. He captained the Walker Cup side twice at Muirfield 1979 and Cypress Point in 1981, before becoming Chairman of Selectors.
Robin Snook said:
“Rodney has an unmatched treasure trove of stories that can never be repeated in today’s more pressurised and commercialised world of golf. It has been a privilege to record for future generations so many golden nuggets of golfing history. His story is a fascinating read for all golfing enthusiasts.”
Proceeds from the book will be donated to Ovarian Cancer Action, in memory of Rodney’s late wife, Angela.
