An Ilkley gallery is hosting a month-long photography exhibition celebrating the female body while recognising those whose lives have been affected by breast cancer.
Tinker Gallery is staging ‘Abreast’ throughout October to coincide with Breast Cancer Awareness Month. The exhibition features work by Ilkley-based photographer Laura Slater of Lumiere Photographic, who has captured portraits of women celebrating their bodies and sharing their individual experiences. Some of the images focus on the chest and show scars left by breast cancer treatment, while others take the form of more traditional portraits. The exhibition has been curated by Tinker Gallery owner Joanne Tinker, whose own experience with breast cancer helped shape the project. Joanne was diagnosed with breast cancer in 2023 and underwent a mastectomy followed by radiotherapy. The idea for Abreast developed after Joanne and Laura met North Yorkshire artist Roberta Heslop, whose work includes nude paintings celebrating the female form. Their conversation led to the creation of a wider project exploring women's relationships with their bodies and their different experiences. Alongside the gallery exhibition, Laura has produced an accompanying magazine featuring the photographs and interviews with the women who took part. The magazine gives participants an opportunity to tell their own stories and discuss the experiences behind their portraits. ‘Abreast’ is on display at Tinker Gallery in Ilkley until the end of October.
