Firefighters from Ilkley joined crews from across the area in attending a significant moorland fire near Silsden Tuesday afternoon.

West Yorkshire Fire & Rescue Service [WYFRS] say at the height of the incident, 12 fire engines were in attendance. Firefighters used large jets and Argo Cats to tackle the blaze across challenging terrain and remained at the scene overnight with a walking watch.

A post on the Ilkley Fire Station Facebook page said:

"Yesterday we attended the wildfire above Silsden. Crews from across the brigade attended and some are still in attendance this morning as the incident is ongoing."

The Ilkley team also posted a warning about the very warm weather mading the ground extremely dry and is high risk for fire at the moment:

"Please remember if visiting the moorlands, no not use BBQS or camp fires, take your litter with you, discard of smoking materials safely, and if you see flames or smoke please call 999."

People are asked to avoid the area to allow emergency services to continue their work safely.

WYFRS said:

"Thank you to our firefighters and partner agencies for their continued efforts in challenging conditions."

Posting on his Facebook page Tuesday evening, Ilkley's MP Robbie Moore said:

"Huge well done and thank you to the continued efforts of our emergency services, local farmers and gamekeepers for helping tackle the fire on Silsden Moor this evening.

"There have been teams attending the scene from across West Yorkshire, including engines from neighbouring North Yorkshire. I am immensely grateful to all support crews for their efforts."
