Young tennis players in Ilkley received some expert advice when renowned coach and author Judy Murray made a surprise visit to a local club.
Murray was in the town as a guest at this year’s Ilkley Literature Festival, where she is appearing as an author to discuss her debut crime novel, Game, Set & Murder. The novel draws on the world she knows best, with the crime story set against the backdrop of professional tennis. During her time in Ilkley, Murray took the opportunity to visit the Ilkley Lawn and Tennis Club, where a number of junior players were on court. The Scottish tennis coach is the mother of former world number one and three-time Grand Slam singles champion Sir Andy Murray, as well as multiple Grand Slam doubles champion Jamie Murray. She coached both sons during the early stages of their careers and also served as Great Britain’s Fed Cup captain. During her visit, some of the club’s juniors were able to hear Judy’s advice and pick up tips to help with their own tennis development. The club said: “A huge thank you to Judy Murray for taking the time to pop into the Club whilst in Ilkley for the Ilkley Literature Festival! “Some of our juniors were lucky enough to be on court and hear a few of Judy’s top tips to help with their tennis journey.” The Ilkley Literature Festival is running throughout October, bringing a programme of authors, poets and other well-known guests to venues across the town.
