Shakespeare’s famous comedy, The Merry Wives of Windsor, opens in the Wharfeside Theatre at Ilkley Playhouse on Thursday, 13th March.
The play sees Falstaff, staying in Windsor and down on his luck, decides to restore his fortunes by seducing the wives of two wealthy citizens. He sends Mistress Page and Mistress Ford identical love letters, but they discover his double dealing and far from being the demure homemakers our antagonist expects, orchestrate an elaborate series of tricks that turn the tables on their would-be seducer.
This riotous play celebrates not only the silliness of some of Shakespeare’s best comic characters, but also the timeless themes of female friendship, marital trust, and the art of turning societal norms upside down.
The Merry Wives of Windsor runs until 22nd March, tickets are available from ilkleyplayhouse.co.uk
