Running until Saturday [28th June] in the Wharfeside Theatre at Ilkley Playhouse is James Graham’s Labour of Love. Next month has a mix of music, comedy and drama, as Caroline Muttons reviews for Your Ilkley.
Labour of Love is a witty and heartfelt comedy that explores the shifting political landscape of the party politics through the eyes of MP David Lyons and his sharp-tongued constituency agent, Jean Whittaker. As they navigate decades of party infighting, leadership changes and electoral battles, their fiery yet deeply loyal relationship provides both hilarity and warmth. Graham’s script is full of sharp dialogue, revealing the clash between idealism and pragmatism in politics, while also delivering touching moments of personal sacrifice and friendship. Set in a constantly evolving political world, Labour of Love is not just about policy and power – it’s about people, their relationships and the humour that helps them survive even the most turbulent of times.

The Rob Dylan Band, the UK’s greatest tribute to the music of Bob Dylan, return to Ilkley Playhouse on Friday 4th July. Formed by a group of musicians who share a passion for the music of Bob Dylan, their performance captures the spirit of the Rolling Thunder Revue with exciting and dynamic playing and powerful vocals.

Our final play of the season, which opens on Monday 7th July, is a tense and gripping drama The River, by Jez Butterworth. On a moonless night in August when the sea trout are ready to run, the Man brings his new girlfriend to the remote family cabin where he has come to fish since he was a boy. However, she is not remotely interested in the sport and would rather stay in the cabin with her book. When she finally agrees, the next time we see The Man he is reporting his girlfriend as missing, lost in the darkness. But it soon becomes clear that she is not the only woman he has brought here – or indeed the last. Weaving between girlfriends at different times, the Man’s self-destructive pattern of behaviour becomes evident. A solitary loner at heart, he is seeking love but is always ultimately disappointed. The play runs until 12th July in the Wildman Studio.

Stagefright Comedy Club returns to the Wildman Studio on Saturday 19th July. Front lining the event is Edinburgh Festival Award winner Jonny Pelham. He has performed on Live at The Apollo, appeared on Mock the Week, Alan Davies As Yet Untitled, Russell Howard’s Stand-Up Central and Live from the BBC. He has received four and five star reviews from The Guardian, The Times, The Telegraph, The Scotsman and The Herald. Joining him is Hannah Platt, named ‘voice of a generation’ (The Skinny), with ‘humour sharp enough to draw blood’ (The Guardian). Her debut Fringe show was nominated for four awards including Nextup’s Biggest Award in Comedy and she earned four and five star reviews from The Scotsman, DIVA magazine and Chortle. She has appeared on Comedy Central Live, BBC Three and Radio Four and supported Fern Brady, Ashley Gavin and Lou Sanders on their UK tours. Also performing are El Purnell, described as ‘staggeringly original’ and Gareth the Poet – ‘a real natural, had the audience in palm of his hand with his hilarious verses and side splitting jokes’ (Toft House Comedy).
On Friday 25th July, Voodoo Room returns to Ilkley Playhouse to pay tribute to some of the greatest names in rock history - Jimi Hendrix, Eric Clapton and Cream, to name a few. Voodoo Room is a stunning power-trio featuring some of the UK’s finest musicians. Expect a world-class show, put together in total appreciation of the massive pioneers of classic blues and rock.
