Northern trains expected to 'run normally' this Easter, passengers told

Northern is not expecting disruption to its services during the Easter weekend.

Northern says the majority of its services will run as normal over the Easter bank holiday, while reminding customers to plan ahead and check before travelling.

Train operator Northern is reassuring customers that most services across its network will be running normally this Easter, helping people to get out and enjoy the long weekend.

While some parts of the railway will be affected by planned engineering work, the vast majority of routes will remain open, with trains continuing to run throughout the bank holiday period.

Easter is traditionally one of the key times of year for the railway to carry out essential upgrades and maintenance, meaning some services will be amended or reduced.

However, Northern says disruption will be limited and alternative travel options will be in place where needed.

Most services will run to normal timetables on Good Friday, Easter Sunday and Easter Monday, with 'off-peak' fares available all day - making it an ideal time for a day out by rail. 

Matt Rice, Chief Operating Officer at Northern said: 

“The good news for customers is that most of our trains will be running as normal this Easter, so people can continue to rely on us to get where they need to be.

“As always during a bank holiday, there will be some changes to services while essential engineering work takes place, but we’re working hard to keep disruption to a minimum and keep people moving.

“We’re asking customers to check before they travel and allow a little extra time for their journey, so they can enjoy a smooth and stress-free Easter by rail.”

The main disruptions on the Northern network over the Easter weekend are:

  • Work on the West Coast Main Line affecting routes through Preston, Lancaster and the surrounding area
  • Buses replace trains between Huddersfield and Lockwood/ Penistone
  • No trains between Leeds and York via Garforth - buses are running between Leeds and York, and York and Selby
