Last weekend, 32 young people from West Yorkshire Scouts took part in an intensive training camp in Ilkley as they prepare for an exciting international expedition to Peru 12 - 24 August 2026.
The training camp at Curley Hill marked a key milestone in the group’s journey, helping participants develop the practical skills, resilience, and teamwork needed for a challenging overseas expedition. When in Peru, the Scouts will split into two groups, each undertaking a unique and meaningful experience.
One group will spend time in Cusco supporting valuable community-based projects, working alongside local partners and gaining first-hand experience of global citizenship and social responsibility. The second group will take on a demanding hiking expedition through Peru’s breathtaking landscapes, building confidence, leadership, and outdoor skills.
After completing their separate programmes, the two groups will reunite to visit Machu Picchu, the UNESCO World Heritage Site and historic home of the Incas, bringing the expedition together as a shared cultural and educational experience.

Toby Hammond, County Lead Volunteer for West Yorkshire Scouts, said:
“This expedition is about far more than travel. It’s about young people pushing themselves beyond their comfort zones, developing independence, and gaining a deeper understanding of the world around them. The training camp in Ilkley is a vital step in preparing them for the challenges ahead, and I’m incredibly proud of the commitment and enthusiasm they’ve shown.”
West Yorkshire Scouts continues to provide young people with opportunities to experience adventure, build skills for life, and make a positive impact both locally and internationally.
