Tesco is introducing a range of initiatives this summer to help support families during the school holidays, including food donation bags, fundraising for charities and free food offers for children.
The supermarket is working with charities Trussell and Felix to provide additional support for people facing food insecurity during the summer break, when some children no longer have access to free school meals.
From 20th July to 30th August in England and Wales, customers at large Tesco stores, including Ilkley, will be able to purchase pre-filled food donation bags costing between £2 and £4.
The bags contain long-life food and household essentials, with donations going to Trussell and Felix for distribution to food banks and charities across the UK.
Tesco will also run a round-up at the till campaign from 3rd to 9th August, giving shoppers the option to round their bill up to the nearest pound.
The money raised will be shared between the two charities.
Customers with a Tesco Clubcard can receive one free children's meal with the purchase of an adult item, with qualifying purchases starting from 60p.
Christine Heffernan, Chief Communications and Sustainability Officer at Tesco, said:
"We want to be able to support our charity partners to help those needing a little extra support this summer.
"Our partnerships with Felix and Trussell are central to this aim.
"When you're out doing your weekly shop this summer, dropping a few tins into a food collection point, picking up a food donation bag in our stores or rounding up your grocery bill, can make a difference to the lives of thousands of children in communities across the UK."
According to Trussell, demand for food bank support for children remains significantly higher than before the pandemic, while Felix says many of the charities it works with have seen increasing demand over the past year.
Matthew van Duyvenbode, Co-Chief Executive Officer at Trussell, said:
"Our community of food banks distributed more than 900,000 parcels for children last year, demonstrating the unacceptable levels of hunger and hardship so many families are currently facing.
"The support of our partner Tesco is crucial, providing in-store summer pick-up bags and making it much easier for people to support their local food bank throughout the school holidays."
Charlotte Hill, Chief Executive of Felix, added:
"We know demand for food support is growing as people across the UK face cost-of-living pressures.
"The donation bags in Tesco stores are vital. The food donated will be shared with charities and community groups that can offer not just meals, but spaces and activities for children during the summer holidays."
The summer initiatives will be available at the Tesco Superstore on Springs Lane in Ilkley throughout the school holiday period.
