Ebeneezer Scrooge is the star of a new festive campaign aiming to get more Ilkley residents to recycle.
The Bradford Council-fronted campaign features the infamous miser claiming that separating recyclables from waste is pointless, as he believes it all ends up in landfill.
An elf and angel point out the benefits of recycling to the penny pinching protagonist of A Christmas Carol, highlighting how important it is for the environment.
After some persuasion, Scrooge agrees to separate his waste – landing him on Santa’s “nice list.”
A Bradford Council spokesperson said: “The message is that separating waste and recycling as much as possible saves a significant amount of waste from going to landfill.
“A large proportion of the excess waste generated at Christmas can go in the recycling bin including metal screw caps from empty bottles (as well as the bottles themselves), foil wrappers from chocolates, drinks cans, foil lids, foil mince pie cases, paper, card, plastic bottles and glass.
“A full list of everything that can be put in the recycling bin can be found Bradford Council’s website.”
Councillor Sarah Ferriby, Portfolio Holder for Healthy People and Places, said: “The festive period tends to mean our bins are fuller, so we should recycle as much as possible to prevent items from ending up in landfill, or having an impact on our environment.”
