Clayful celebrates one year with creative community events

Jacqui Brett (L) and Fran Brett (R) of Clayful, Ilkley

Ilkley's unique craft studio, Clayful, based in the Moors Shopping Centre is celebrating its first birthday this month.

Since opening its doors on 11 December 2024, Clayful has become a must-visit destination for creativity, fun, community, and relaxation, welcoming visitors of all ages and artistic abilities.

Founded by daughter-and-mother duo Fran Brett and Jacqui Brett, Clayful was born from Fran’s long-standing dream to open a pottery studio inspired by her childhood visits to ‘Create’ in Ilkley and Jacqui’s passion for cooking and owning her own café. Fran, a former psychotherapist specialising in teen addiction, brings a deep understanding of the therapeutic benefits of creativity, while Jacqui, a former artist and dedicated sister at Leeds General Infirmary, brings compassion and artistic flair to the heart of the business.

Clayful offers a colourful and inviting studio where guests can enjoy pottery painting, wheel throwing, creative workshops, parties, and group events. As a fully licenced bar, the studio provides an alternative social experience for adults seeking something more meaningful than a typical night out. Guests can drop in spontaneously or book ahead for special occasions, team-building sessions, and group activities. The studio regularly collaborates with local businesses, such as the Little Calf play centre, and offers bespoke creative sessions for corporate groups.

Clayful’s calendar is packed with events designed to spark creativity and bring people together, from relaxing Sip & Paint sessions where adults can enjoy their favourite drink while crafting a pottery masterpiece, to hands-on craft workshops that explore a range of materials and techniques. Families can join Morning Story Time, a playful and imaginative hour for young children, while adults seeking a more artistic challenge can take part in Clayful’s life drawing classes.

Speaking about the appeal of the studio, Fran says:

“We love being able to offer something special for children, families, and adults alike. More and more adults are telling us they’d rather spend their time doing something creative than simply sitting in a pub. Because we’re fully licenced, we can provide a relaxed, social space that really resonates, especially now, as people increasingly look for meaningful experiences. And next year, my mum will be offering a full café menu.

“We’re incredibly grateful for the support we’ve received in Ilkley. This first year has flown by, and we’re excited to keep growing and expanding our connection with the community in 2026.”

Beyond the studio, Clayful is committed to supporting the wider community, the team recently visiting Leeds General Hospital to run free creative sessions for young children with cancer, helping them pass the time and find comfort through creativity; an initiative that is set to continue.

Fran has also collaborated with doctors in Leeds to explore the therapeutic benefits of sculpting, including teaching them how to support domestic violence survivors in South Africa through expressive clay work.

To mark their first anniversary, Clayful is hosting two special events: a family celebration on Thursday 11 December, featuring a fun face-painting session open to all families, and a VIP Adults Party on Saturday 13 December - further information is available at www.clayful.net
