The cancer team at Airedale NHS Foundation Trust has launched a new website designed to support patients preparing for radiotherapy treatment.
The online resource aims to give patients and their families access to information about radiotherapy in one place, helping explain what to expect before, during and after treatment. It follows the introduction of a similar website created last year for immunotherapy patients. Radiotherapy is a treatment that uses high doses of radiation to target cancer cells while limiting damage to healthy tissue. Patients referred for radiotherapy through Airedale Hospital receive treatment at the Leeds Cancer Centre, one of the UK’s largest radiotherapy centres. The website explains the two main types of radiotherapy and how they may be used to treat cancer, manage symptoms or help prevent cancer returning. It also includes videos covering topics such as travelling to appointments, planning scans, treatment procedures and the healthcare professionals patients may meet throughout their care. Information about side effects, cancer-related fatigue and support services for patients and families is also available. Caroline Salt, Macmillan Lead Cancer Nurse at Airedale NHS Foundation Trust, said: “Being told you need radiotherapy can feel daunting, especially when there is so much information to take in at once. “This new website is designed to guide patients and their families through each step of the process, helping them feel informed, reassured and supported before, during and after their treatment.” More information about the radiotherapy and immunotherapy pathways can be found on the Airedale NHS Foundation Trust website.
