For their final show of the year. local music promoters Village Pavilion will host a show by the genre-defying trio Archipelago at Ilkley Moor Vaults on Saturday 16th November 2024.
Formed out of the North East of England’s creative musical underground and fronted by multi-instrumentalist and composer Faye MacCalman.
Featuring John Pope (bass) and Christian Anderson (drums) their sound has been described as a dreamlike collision of otherworldly atmospheres, heartfelt song-writing and energetic off-kilter rhythms. Moving between instruments and effects to create the illusion of a much larger ensemble, before peeling back to their raw, improvisational trio form, Archipelago’s uncompromising refusal to fit in one genre makes for a fully-charged musical experience.
With influences stretching from Joni Mitchell to Don Cherry to Esperanza Spalding, Archipelago draw on a deep pool of sonic references and the diversity of their individual musical histories. Their latest album ‘Echoes to the Sky’ was critically acclaimed, including backing from Jazzwise magazine, Gilles Peterson and a nomination for UK Jazz Act of The Year in the Jazz FM Awards with appearances at Love Supreme Festival, Manchester Jazz Festival and London Jazz Festival.
‘A quiet fire ...a gently held back power and energy that I absolutely love’ - Corey Mwamba- BBC Radio 3 Freeness
‘Very original, evocative, and at times haunting’ - Kevin Le Gendre, BBC Radio 3
'**** Superb...epically adventurous... An impressive unity of vision' - Jazzwise
Support for Archipelago comes from singer songwriter Anna Tempest, an Anglo German Siren, now residing in the Colne valley. As moving as the rising mist, chilling as the blackened waters, soul stirring as the windswept moorlands. Her lofi guitar melodies and warm vocals bring together local folklore and nature in dreamy songs.
Tickets are only £7 and are available from Eventbrite.
