The excitement is building as the Ilkley Cycle Races make their return this Friday, July 4th, promising a high-energy evening of free, fast-paced racing and vibrant street-side entertainment right in the heart of town.
“Racing in Ilkley is always a highlight of the season”
commented Jonny Morton, elite racer,
“the crowds are right on the barriers, cheering every lap. The atmosphere is electric and it honestly feels more like a festival than a race. It’s just pure fun from start to finish.”
Each year, thousands line the streets of Ilkley to witness some of the UK’s top cycling talent take on the tight corners and short climbs of the town-centre circuit. This year’s event is shaping up to be bigger and better than ever, with a packed race schedule, a welcoming family atmosphere, and a delicious selection of local food and drink on offer.
The action begins at 5:30pm with the Under 16s race, quickly followed by the ever-popular Ilkley CC Young Riders showcasing their skills during “Pedal on the Grove.” The racing heats up as the evening progresses, with veterans, semi-pro, and elite men’s and women’s races roaring around the closed roads at speeds of up to 30mph. The Orbea Women’s Grand Prix kicks off at 7:50pm, followed by the headline Lister Horsfall Grand Prix at 8:50pm, guaranteeing a dramatic finale to the evening.
Spectators can enjoy a festival atmosphere throughout, with refreshments from local favourites including Bini Brew Co, Ilkley Brewery, La Stazione, and Martinez. Whether you’re after a cold pint, a glass of wine, or a cocktail, there’s plenty to raise a toast to. On the food front, expect crowd-pleasers from Bomba Paella, Lishmans, and Loaf & Loaded, making it easy to grab a bite while soaking up the electric race-day energy.
The Grove will be transformed into a pedestrian zone from the early afternoon, with parking suspended from noon and the full circuit closed to traffic by 5:15 PM. The race organisers are encouraging spectators to arrive early to get the best spots along the route.
Tom Harris, one of the events organisers said:
“There’s nothing quite like the atmosphere on race night in Ilkley. Watching from the roadside as the riders fly past just a few feet away you can feel the energy and excitement in every lap. The crowd brings so much life to the event; people line the streets, cheer from windows, and really get behind the riders. It’s that kind of support that makes this race so special, not just for the athletes but for everyone involved. And honestly, we couldn’t do any of it without our amazing volunteers. From setting up barriers to running race HQ and keeping everyone safe, they give up their time to make this event happen, and we’re incredibly grateful for everything they do.”
Prize presentations will take place throughout the evening, with the final celebrations and circuit clear-up concluding around 10:30pm. It’s more than a race - it’s a summer highlight, a community celebration, and one of the best nights out in Ilkley’s calendar.
Whether you’re a dedicated cycling fan or just looking for something exciting to do this Friday night, Ilkley Cycle Races 2025 offer thrilling entertainment, a great local vibe, and fun for all ages. And best of all - it’s completely free.
