Stuart Heaviside started his 160 mile run yesterday evening (Sunday 11th) for his girlfriend, Mahalia.
Stuart is taking part in the UK’s most demanding ultra-running events, the Montane Winter Spine Challenger North, to raise funds for the Breast Cancer Unit at Airedale General Hospital.
The runners attempt a non-stop 160-mile route along the Pennine Way, starting in Hardraw, North Yorkshire, and finishing in Kirk Yetholm in the Scottish Borders.
Participants have a maximum of 108 hours to complete the course.
The route passes through some of Britain’s most remote and challenging landscapes, including the Yorkshire Dales, Northumberland National Park, Hadrian’s Wall and the Cheviot Hills.
The challenge follows a difficult year for the Stuart and his partner, Mahalia, who was diagnosed with lobular breast cancer in June 2025 after discovering a lump several weeks earlier.
Mahalia underwent a series of medical procedures including biopsies, two major surgeries and a double mastectomy, along with ongoing treatment and hospital appointments.
After several months of treatment, she has since been given the all-clear.
He commented on this time in their lives, saying:
"Watching Mahalia face cancer with such strength and determination was terrifying, but I have never been prouder.
"She is my inspiration to never give up.
"For this reason, I’ve chosen to raise money for the Breast Cancer Unit at Airedale General Hospital."
All the money raised will go to Airedale Hospital Community Charity's breast cancer clinic.
"We couldn’t be more grateful for the care, compassion, and professionalism they showed her at every stage.
"This challenge is my way of saying thank you."
Stuart had a tagret of raising £1,000 and has raised £2,582 so far.
