Train operator Northern has launched a new scheme to help children get confident on the train ahead of the big secondary school move.
The new 'Settling In' ticket will offer one free adult and child day ticket, valid anywhere on the Northern network, to families whose Year 6-age child is moving from primary to secondary school this autumn.
The free tickets will allow a parent or guardian to travel by train with their child to their new school induction day, so that they can practice the journey to school and get comfortable travelling by train.
The scheme is being launched at a time when household budgets are under increasing strain.
The operator hopes that a free 'trial run' will mean one less cost to absorb for parents, at what is already an expensive time of year.
Alex Hornby, Commercial and Customer Director for Northern said:
"Here at Northern, we know that starting secondary school is a huge milestone for young people, and we know that for many families, every pound counts right now.
"These free introductory tickets are our way of making sure that getting to grips with the train journey - building that independence and confidence in their own ability to travel - doesn't come at a cost.
“We want children to arrive on their first day of secondary school feeling ready for the year ahead."
Under public ownership, Northern is contributing to a more reliable, better-value railway for passengers, as the journey to Great British Railways (GBR) continues.
GBR is focused on performance, reducing cancellations, improving punctuality and ensuring faster recovery from disruption.
Fares have also been frozen for the first time in three decades, helping make travel more affordable.
Alongside improved accessibility and a more joined-up approach across track and train, this is creating a simpler, more passenger-focused railway that works better for everyday journeys.
Rail Minister, Lord Peter Hendy said:
"This kind of offer is exactly what we want to see from publicly owned operators as we move towards Great British Railways.
"As we undertake major reforms across our railways, we're making sure that travelling by train is an affordable and accessible option for young people getting to school.
"That's why we've frozen fares for the first time in 30 years, helping with the cost of living, and are building a reliable railway that puts passengers first."
The scheme is open to all Year 6 pupils due to move to a secondary school on the Northern network.
Families are encouraged to make the practice journey in advance of the new school year to get the most out of the experience.
