Ilkley's MP has called for Government action after Bradford Council temporarily stopped accepting fridges and freezers at its Household Waste and Recycling Centres.
Keighley and Ilkley MP Robbie Moore has written to the Environment Secretary over what the council has described as a national shortage of specialist processing facilities.
Bradford Council announced on Monday (10th August) that its recycling centres were temporarily unable to accept fridges and freezers and asked residents to store unwanted appliances at home until the situation is resolved.
Mr Moore said he was concerned the suspension could lead to an increase in fly-tipping across the area.
He has also used his letter to renew calls for waste disposal services in Ilkley to be restored following the closure of the Golden Butts Household Waste and Recycling Centre in 2024.
The Golden Butts site closed alongside Sugden End in the Worth Valley, leaving residents in the Keighley and Ilkley constituency with fewer options for disposing of household waste.
Mr Moore said:
“I am deeply concerned that the temporary suspension of fridge and freezer collections will make the problem of fly-tipping even worse in my constituency.
“Fly-tipping has long been a problem in Keighley and Ilkley, particularly since the closure of two local Household Waste and Recycling Centres in 2024 at Sugden End in the Worth Valley and Golden Butts in Ilkley, which limited residents’ options for disposing of their waste."
He added:
“As the Council’s announcement refers to a ‘national shortage of specialist processing facilities’, I believe there is a clear need for urgent Government action to ensure that local authorities have the capacity and support they need to manage this issue.
“I am therefore writing to ask what steps the Government intends to take to address this national shortage and support local authorities in ensuring that residents have access to adequate and reliable facilities to legally dispose of fridges, freezers and other household waste.
“I would also be grateful if, when responding, you could outline how the Government intends to mandate that Bradford Council must reopen the Sugden End Household Waste and Recycling Centre in the Worth Valley, as well as restore the service it closed in Ilkley.”
Mr Moore said he will update residents when he receives a response from the Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs.
