Known locally as 'Daredevil Grandma', 82-year-old Valerie Appleton from Ilkley is once again proving that age is just a number.
No stranger to taking on incredible challenger, Valerie 'Wing Walked' in aid of LS29 Special Needs Support Group in 2022, and a year later marked turning 80 by abseiling from the East Stand Elland Road stadium in aid of Yorkshire Cat Rescue.
Now in 2026, she is preparing to take to the skies once again - for her biggest challenge yet - an aerobatic wing walk, including loops and barrel rolls, on 15 August at East Leeds Airfield.

This time, she's raising funds to help preserve the historic home [pictured above] of Ilkley Musical Theatre Society on Leeds Road. Operatic House is a beautiful listed building and much more that just than a theatre rehearsal space. It is a valued community hub, providing a home for Ilkley Musical Theatre Society [IMTS], That Sing Thing, Outside the Box -music group, Charlotte Willis Dance Academy and Joze Dance. Every week, people of all ages come through its doors to sing, dance, perform, learn, socialise, and build confidence.
To update and protect the building for future generations, Operatic House needs repairs, maintenance and much updating, including a new kitchen, storage and redecorating.

Valerie is not just supporting the building from the sidelines—she is deeply involved in its life. She continues to take part in Ilkley Musical Theatre Society productions and is currently preparing for the newest show, The Prince of Egypt, which is at the King's Hall 4-7 November 2026. Alongside performing, she also helps behind the scenes with set building, supporting productions in every way she can and helping bring each show to life.
Valerie has always believed in giving back to her community. At 82 years old, she's taking on the incredible challenge of a wing walk so that this special building can continue to inspire and bring people together for many years to come.
A spokesperson for IMTS said:
"Every donation, no matter how big or small, will help us preserve this unique community space.
"If you're unable to donate, please consider sharing our fundraiser with your family, friends, and colleagues.
"Let's all get behind our "Daredevil Grandma" as she takes to the skies once again. Together, we can ensure this historic building remains a thriving home for theatre, music, singing, dance, and our whole community.
"Thank you for your generosity and support."
