A long forgotten travelling circus is set to return to Yorkshire this summer, following an unusual discovery in a North Yorkshire barn.
Local theatre producer Jamie Hudson, of Yeadon Town Hall Theatre, uncovered records of a historic “Yorkshire Circus” after finding references in an old book. Further investigation led to the discovery of original equipment, including wagons, costumes and props, which had been left untouched for years.
Over the past two years, the collection has been carefully restored and developed into a new production, now launching as The Great Yorkshire Circus.
The show will tour Yorkshire for a limited eight week run under a modern big top, combining traditional circus skills with a strong theatrical feel. Audiences can expect a mix of aerial performance, ground based acts, music and family friendly entertainment.
The production has been designed as an intimate experience, with just 250 seats per performance, creating a close up and engaging atmosphere.
The Great Yorkshire Circus will visit Ilkley’s East Holmes Field from 5th to 9th August, with performances at 11am and 2pm daily.
Jamie Hudson said:
“This has been two years in the making. It started with a single discovery and has grown into a full touring production. We wanted to create something that feels traditional, accessible and genuinely magical for families.”
The Yorkshire Circus will also visit Skipton, Harrogate and Ripon.
