A new railway station has been confirmed for Bradford Interchange, with plans to improve connections across Yorkshire and the North.
The Government announced today (20th October) that the new station will be delivered in the 2030s as part of Northern Powerhouse Rail (NPR).
The development could improve services for Ilkley passengers travelling through Bradford, with plans for more frequent trains, faster journeys and improved reliability between major cities including Leeds, Manchester and York.
The new station will replace the existing 1970s facility at Bradford Interchange and form part of Great British Railways.
Bradford Council says the development, alongside the proposed West Yorkshire Mass Transit network, could support thousands of new homes and jobs, as well as more than £1 billion in economic benefits.
Transport Secretary Heidi Alexander said:
“Today marks an important milestone for Bradford with a brand-new station that will transform how people travel across the North.
“By bringing Northern Powerhouse Rail into the heart of the city, we are unlocking the huge potential Bradford offers - improving connections, supporting economic growth and setting the foundations for new homes, jobs and opportunities across the region.”
Mayor of West Yorkshire Tracy Brabin welcomed the announcement, describing it as an “iron clad commitment” to a new city centre station.
The plans form part of wider investment in Northern Powerhouse Rail, which aims to improve journey times and reliability across the region.
