Historic Ilkley building begins new chapter as Verbeia Grange opens

The transformation has been documented in a monthly video series, with the final episode revealing the completed home and the inspiration behind its interior design.

A historic Ilkley building has reopened as a residential care home following a refurbishment costing around £2 million.

Verbeia Grange, on Cross Beck Road, has officially opened its doors, with plans to create around 70 local jobs.

The care home, which is part of Holden Grange, occupies the former Troutbeck Hydro and will provide residential and respite care.

Dating back to the nineteenth century, the building has previously operated as a hydro, hotel and nursing home.

Its colourful history includes a performance by legendary guitarist Jimi Hendrix in 1967, while King Charles has also reportedly stayed at the property.

The building's historical significance was recently recognised by Ilkley Civic Society with the unveiling of a blue plaque.

The refurbishment has included updated bedrooms, communal lounges and a new dining lounge, alongside a restaurant featuring an original stained-glass roof dating back to 1901.

The interiors have been designed by Deborah from Briggate House Interiors, taking inspiration from Ilkley Moor and the surrounding landscape.

Verbeia Grange will follow the care model established at its sister home, Grange Court in Baildon, which holds an Outstanding overall rating from the Care Quality Commission.

Leon, Managing Director of Holden Grange, said:

“Seeing Verbeia Grange ready to welcome residents is a proud moment for Jason, me and everyone who has helped bring this project to life.

“From the beginning, our aim has been to create a home where people feel safe, loved and cared for.

"We want residents to feel known as individuals, to build friendships and to feel part of a community, with their families welcomed into that community too.

“So much work has gone into the building, and now we’re looking forward to filling it with life, friendship and shared experiences.”

The transformation has been documented in a monthly video series, with the final episode revealing the completed home and the inspiration behind its interior design.

Families interested in residential or respite care are now being invited to arrange a visit and meet the team.
