Ilkley Scouts launches new programme for young people

Scouts across Ilkley are celebrating the launch of a new Explorer Scouts brand and programme.

The new brand offers a refreshed experience for young people aged 14 to 18.

It has been designed around the interests of young people, with a focus on adventure, real-world skills, wellbeing and making a positive difference in the local community.

Explorers will have more choice over how they spend their time at Scouts, with a combination of new and familiar Activity Badges, Challenge Awards and Top Awards.

The programme is designed to be flexible and youth-led, giving young people the opportunity to shape their own experiences and focus on activities that interest them.

The launch forms part of a national relaunch by Scouts, which aims to support around 50,000 Explorer Scouts across the UK.

For young people in Ilkley, the new programme will provide opportunities to try new activities, develop practical and leadership skills, take on challenges and make memories with friends.

Toby Hammond, County Lead Volunteer, said:

“We’re really excited to be bringing the new Explorer brand and programme to Ilkley.

“Explorers are at an important stage of their lives, when they’re becoming more independent, discovering what they’re capable of and thinking about the future.

“This new programme gives them the freedom to take the lead, try new things and build skills that will stay with them for life.

“Most importantly, it’s about making sure young people have a place where they belong, where their ideas are listened to and where they can have great adventures with their friends.”

The new programme has been developed with input from both young people and adult volunteers, with Scouts saying it will give Explorers a clearer journey while allowing units to create activities around their interests.

Explorers are young people aged 14 to 18 who meet in Explorer Units with the support of adult volunteers.

Alongside their regular activities, they can take part in adventurous activities, develop leadership skills and work towards a range of awards.
