Two dedicated fundraisers, Joe Gaughan and Simon Horsfall, are preparing to take on the iconic London Marathon this year in support of The Principle Trust Children’s Charity.
The pair are aiming to raise thousands of pounds to help families enjoy much-needed respite breaks on Sunday 26th April.
For Joe Gaughan from Silsden, running the marathon has always been on his bucket list, watching in awe each year and hoping that one day he too can complete the massive milestone achievement. Currently in week seven of a 16-week training plan, Joe says preparation has been both rewarding and challenging. Originally aiming to raise £3,000, Joe is already nearing that milestone and has now set his sights on reaching £4,000.
Joe Gaughan, Director of Gaughan Electrical, said:
“It’s a charity that’s close to our hearts as a family, and we are a proud patron through our business, so there was only one charity in my mind that I would ever try and represent. Some days are better than others, but keeping the charity in the back of my mind helps boost morale. A donation, no matter how big or small, can help give children a much-needed break and put a smile on their faces.”
For fellow runner Simon Horsfall, the marathon has long been an aspiration, and he’s even been inspired by his family members who have previously completed the marathon. Simon, who is from Ilkley, has entered the ballot each year, hoping to secure a place, although he’s never been lucky enough, until this year!
Simon’s connection to The Principle Trust Children’s Charity developed through supporting its fundraising initiatives, getting to know the founder's family, and even donating a holiday home in Bamburgh for charity auctions.
Speaking about his passion for fundraising ahead of the London Marathon, Simon Horsfall, Independent Mortgage & Protection Adviser, from Vista Financial Management, added:
“Having three children and loving our own family breaks has made me realise how fortunate we are. Seeing the charity help other families enjoy similar experiences feels like a wonderful thing to support. I’m pleased with how training is progressing, although the runs are getting longer and the weather hasn’t been particularly kind. I’m hoping for better conditions in London on race day!”
With a fundraising target of £2,000, Simon is already close to achieving his goal and hopes to push beyond it to £2,500. His training schedule includes three runs per week, often accompanied by his 11-year-old son.
Funds raised by Joe and Simon will help The Principle Trust Children’s Charity continue providing free respite breaks to children facing adverse childhood experiences and their families across the region, offering opportunities to relax, reconnect, and create lasting memories. Both runners are encouraging the community to support their fundraising efforts and help transform lives through the power of a family break.
