87 year-old Ilkley campaigner and students join forces against litter

Ilkley resident Thomas Black

An 87-year-old Ilkley environmental campaigner has teamed up with local school pupils to film a new short aimed at encouraging cleaner streets and greener communities.

Thomas Black, a retired West Yorkshire businessman and long-standing anti-litter advocate, has launched his fourth short film promoting community pride and responsible behaviour. This latest project was filmed in Otley and features Thomas alongside his granddaughter and pupils from a local school.

Thomas has previously produced three successful anti-litter films, which together have attracted more than half a million online views. Despite his age, he continues to campaign passionately for cleaner streets and hopes that involving local young people will inspire children and families to take greater care of their environment.

Thomas said:

“Littering is not just unsightly – it damages our countryside, harms wildlife, and ultimately costs taxpayers a great deal of money.

“Education and awareness are key to changing attitudes, which is why involving the next generation in this film was so important.”

Reflecting on the success of his previous work and embracing platforms like TikTok to spread the message, Thomas added with a smile:

“I certainly didn’t expect the last one to go viral — I’m 87, not exactly a social media influencer! But if this one inspires people in Ilkley and beyond, that’s more than enough for me.”

The film is now available on YouTube and the ‘What a Load of Rubbish’ social media channels. You can watch it below:

Thomas says:

“My motivation is simple, I may be 87, but I still care deeply about the world we’re leaving for future generations.”
