Ilkley Grammar School [IGS] has confirmed this week that planning approval has been granted for the redevelopment of the site between Springs Lane and Cowpasture Road.
Bradford Council planners have granted permission for major plans which include the demolition of several existing teaching and sports blocks and their replacement with new teaching block, multi-use game areas, sports hall and swimming pool facilities. Refurbishment of the Marshall Building are also included and the installation of sub-station, plus external works to landscaping and car parking.
This investment forms part of the Department for Education’s national School Rebuilding Programme, IGS was selected for funding in 2022 as one of the schools most 'in need of significant rebuild and refurbishment.'
A spokesperson for the school said:
"The new facilities will be truly transformational, replacing buildings that are nearing the end of their lifespan with modern, inspiring spaces that support high-quality teaching and learning.
"The development will also include a new sports hall, two activity studios and swimming pool, promoting physical health and wellbeing, and providing a valuable resource for the wider community. Designed with sustainability in mind, the new teaching block will be net-zero in operation, reflecting a strong commitment to environmental responsibility."

The planning officers report said:
"The proposed development of this site is considered acceptable for the reasons detailed in the officer report and subject to the listed conditions. Subject to compliance with the listed conditions the proposal is considered to be acceptable in planning terms and accords with the requirements of the National Planning Policy Framework, the Core Strategy Development Plan Document and the Ilkley Neighbourhood Development Plan."
To protect nearby residents, there is a suggested planning condition on when construction work can take place, Monday to Friday 0730 to 18:00; Saturday 0800 to 1300; with no work on Sundays and public/bank holidays.
The school says construction is due to begin after the exam period in July 2025. Ahead of this, several slit trenches will be excavated and made good again over the May half-term break to allow further investigation of existing services.
