Sporting legends tee off as Yorkshire Invitational gets underway in Ilkley

A host of sporting legends descended on Ilkley yesterday (Wednesday) as the Yorkshire Invitational got underway.

The two-day golf event returned to Ilkley Golf Club for its seventh edition, bringing together some of the biggest names from golf, football, rugby and other sports.

European golf legend Colin Montgomerie OBE is once again hosting the event and is joined by four-time major winner and World Golf Hall of Fame member Dame Laura Davies.

Former England football manager Sir Gareth Southgate is also among the famous faces taking part.

Other names on the line-up include Rugby World Cup winner Jason Robinson OBE, former Arsenal and England footballer Lee Dixon and New Zealand rugby great Zinzan Brooke.

The action got underway yesterday with a Pro-Am in the morning, followed by the event's Celeb-Am during the afternoon.

Southgate, Robinson, Dixon and Brooke were among those captaining teams in the Celeb-Am, which sees famous sporting figures take to the Ilkley course alongside amateur golfers.

The event continues today (Thursday) with the Tournament Pro-Am, featuring Montgomerie and Davies alongside a field of professional and amateur players.

Organisers had expected more than 1,600 spectators across the two days, making the 2026 Yorkshire Invitational its biggest edition to date.

A dedicated spectator area has also been introduced, featuring food and drink, entertainment, exhibitors, competitions and interactive golf activities.

As well as bringing some of sport's biggest names to Ilkley, the event is raising money for Martin House Children's Hospice.

The charity provides specialist care and support to children and young people with life-shortening conditions, as well as their families.

Spectator tickets for the Yorkshire Invitational are free, with visitors encouraged to make a donation to Martin House.

The tournament concludes at Ilkley Golf Club today.
