Ilkley residents will have the chance to get recycling advice from Bradford Council later this month as part of a national campaign.
Recycling Week runs from 14th to 26th September, with this year’s campaign encouraging households to keep recyclable items out of general waste and give them the chance of a new life.
Bradford Council is backing the campaign and says there is still room for improvement when it comes to what households put in their recycling bins.
Research by WRAP found that 88 per cent of UK households regularly recycle.
However, 87 per cent of households also attempt to recycle at least one item which is not accepted through kerbside collections, while 57 per cent miss at least one item that could be recycled.
The Government’s Simpler Recycling legislation, introduced earlier this year, means local authorities are moving towards collecting the same recyclable materials, while food waste collections are being introduced in areas that did not previously have them.
Food waste collections are currently being rolled out across the Bradford District.
The council says some items are still regularly put in the wrong bin because residents may not realise they can be recycled, including toothpaste tubes, toilet rolls and shampoo bottles.
As part of Recycling Week, the council’s recycling exhibition vehicle, Gigi, and members of the recycling team will visit Tesco in Ilkley on 22 September.
They will be available to provide information about recycling and answer residents’ questions.
Cllr Ian Walker, Portfolio Holder for Neighbourhoods and Communities, said:
“Most of us are better at recycling than we used to be but there’s still room for improvement.
“To double check what you can place in your recycling bin, please take a look at our website.
“Food waste caddies and bins are also currently being rolled out – if residents have not received theirs yet, they will be coming in the next few months.”
Residents can check what can and cannot be placed in their recycling bins through Bradford Council’s recycling information. Food waste collection information is also available from the council.
