COUNCIL bosses are “actively looking” for a new tip provision in Ilkley – but say they “can’t give a timetable” for when one might return to the town.
The Golden Butts household waste recycling centre was closed in 2024 as part of a number of cost cutting measures by the then Labour authority.
The site has since been sold to a housing developer.
There have been numerous calls to open a new HWRC in the town, and the new Reform leadership had previously said they were looking at re-introducing waste sites in the areas that lost them in 2024.
Without the tip, Ilkley residents face a 22 mile round trip to the nearest tip in Keighley.
On Tuesday the Reform Executive voted to re-open one of the three tips Sugden End in Cross Roads near Keighley.
The re-opening would be funded through the scrapping of £400,000 in culture funding that had been approved by the Council earlier this year as a way to extend the legacy of Bradford’s year as City of Culture.
At the Executive meeting, Ilkley Councillor Jane Sellers asked Council bosses if there was any updated on the plans to open a new HWRC in Ilkley.
She said:
“Following the closure of closure of Golden Butts and the sale of the site by the previous Labour administration, what progress has been made to identify a new site in Ilkley, and what is the expected timetable for some provision?”
Councillor Ian Walker, Portfolio Holder for Neighbourhoods and Communities, replied:
“We’re actively looking for a provision in that area, but unfortunately at this moment I can’t give a timetable.”
After the meeting Councillor Rebecca Poulsen, leader of the Conservatives in Bradford, praised the plans to re-open Sugden End, but added:
“It is disappointing that no formal plans have been announced today to improve waste facilities in Ilkley and Queensbury following the closure and subsequent sale of the sites.
“Cllr Sellers raised the issue of identifying and delivering a site for Ilkley and the Wharfedale area at the Executive meeting and was advised the Council are actively looking at this but had no timescales.
“Sadly, no mention has been made about reintroducing waste facilities in Queensbury, following the closure and subsequent sale of their site.
“My Conservative Group colleagues and will continue to push for a new facility for Queensbury.”
