Separate waste and recycle more this Christmas

Bradford Council is encouraging people to remember what bins to put their waste in this Christmas and make a New Years resolution to recycle more.

Separating waste and recycling as much as possible saves a significant amount of waste from going to landfill. A large proportion of the excess waste generated at Christmas can go in the recycling bin including metal screw caps from empty bottles (as well as the bottles themselves), foil wrappers from chocolates, drinks cans, foil lids, foil mince pie cases, paper, card, plastic bottles and glass.

General waste and recycling will be collected as normal over the festive period but for those whose bin collection days fall on public holidays, the following changes will be in place: Thursday 25 December collections will take place on Monday 22 December; Friday 26 December collections will take place on Monday 29 December and Thursday 1 January collections will take place on Saturday 3 January.

At the end of the holiday period, anyone with a real tree can either chop it up and place it in their garden waste, if they have subscribed to this service, or take it to their local Household Waste Recycling Centre. All Bradford Council HWRCs will be closed on Christmas Day, Boxing Day and New Year’s Day.

Cllr Sarah Ferriby, Portfolio Holder for Healthy People and Places, said:

“The festive period tends to mean our bins are fuller, so we should recycle as much as possible to prevent items from ending up in landfill, or having an impact on our environment. Don’t just put everything in your green general waste bin.

Why not get the children involved – they know what materials go in which bin and will love doing the scrunch test.”
