St John's in Ben Rhydding will be holding a number of events on the theme 'Our Power, Our Planet' over the weekend 24-26 April to celebrate Earth Day.
From its beginning on April 22nd 1970, Earth Day has become an annual, global event drawing attention to the state of the planet and conservation. It advocates environmental education and aims to encourage people to reduce their personal carbon footprints and support renewable energy initiatives in their communities.
The weekend at St John's Church on Bolling Road includes a free film night on Friday 24, an afternoon tea on Saturday 25, as well as a display of artwork by Ben Rhydding Primary School and an Environment service on the Sunday.
The Friday Film, Six Inches of Soil, is the inspiring story of British farmers using regenerative farming to heal the soil, benefit our health and provide for local communities.
The 96 minute film will be followed by a Q and A session, with Nick Bailey, Director, Denton Reserve.
There’ll be the opportunity to discuss the film’s focus on soil health and regenerative agriculture, and hear about Denton Reserve’s latest achievements and plans with its re-thinking 2,500 acres of local Yorkshire countryside.
To book a free seat for the film please visit https://www.eventbrite.com/e/film-screening-six-inches-of-soil-tickets-1985426599405

Karen Palframan, one of the Earth Weekend organisers, says,
“Denton Reserve’s on-going projects to rebalance nature, climate and food production, to regenerate their land and to increase biodiversity should provide a very well-informed and local contribution to the Q&A session.”
Lynn Haygarth, St. John's Parish Environmental office adds
“Then Saturday afternoon brings a different perspective - with local upcycled and handmade crafts, a plant stall and our awesome Fair Trade Stall.”
Weekend events include:
Afternoon Tea - Saturday 25 April 2-4pm
An afternoon of Fairtrade refreshments, homemade treats and warm conversation. There will also be a selection of community stalls focused on caring for God’s creation and craft activities for children.
Environment Service - Sunday 26 April 10am
A service focussed on ‘Our Power, Our Planet’ to include short presentations from the church Environment and Carbon Net Zero groups and Nick Bailey, Denton Reserve.
Earth Day Art Work - All weekend
A display by Ben Rhydding Primary School pupils.
Lynn adds:
“It's all shaping up to be a full and fascinating weekend and, we think, something of an eye opener for anyone curious about the future of “our power and our planet” and with something of interest for all ages.”
Organised by St. John's Environment Committee, further details of the weekend are available here: benrhydding.org.uk/earth-day
