Ilkley care home resident celebrates 106th birthday

Eileen Warham marked her birthday surrounded by friends and staff at Mayfield View care home.

An Ilkley care home resident has celebrated a remarkable milestone after turning 106.

Eileen Warham marked her birthday surrounded by friends and staff at Mayfield View care home, complete with cake, celebrations and one of her favourite things – a glass of wine.

The team recently appealed for birthday cards for Eileen, and she was sent over 300 cards.

Born in 1920, Eileen has lived through more than a century of change, from an era when horse-drawn transport was still a familiar sight to today's world of smartphones and the internet.

She has lived through five monarchs and 25 Prime Ministers and says her continued love of life and people remains important to her.

Her story has a strong connection to Yorkshire's sporting history through her late husband Joe Warham, who spent more than 50 years involved with Leeds Rugby League, now Leeds Rhinos.

Mayfield View shared on social media Eileen giving her thanks to those who attended her birthday party:

Joe became coach of Leeds in 1958 and guided the club to its first Championship title in 1961, before overseeing another Championship success in 1969.

Paying tribute to Eileen on her birthday, the team at Mayfield View said:

“Today we celebrated an extraordinary lady and an extraordinary life, our very own Eileen Warham, who has reached the incredible age of 106.

“Eileen still enjoys her wine and, as she says, she loves life and people, perhaps there's a little secret to 106 right there!

“106 years young, full of character, wonderful memories and still enjoying every minute.

“What an incredible life, what an incredible lady, and what an absolute privilege it is to celebrate this amazing milestone with you.”

Mayfield View is a care home in Ilkley operated by Care UK.
