A branch of McDonalds that opened two years ago has applied to change its opening hours.
A new branch of the fast-food giant opened on Coutances Way in Burley in Wharfedale in 2024 – despite a large amount of opposition.
The planning permission for the restaurant specifies that it cannot open between midnight and 8am.
But now the company has applied to Bradford Council to alter those opening hours.
The new application to vary the conditions of the restaurant seeks a 6.30am opening time.
Documents submitted to Bradford Council to support the earlier opening times claim it will “not result in any adverse impact” on neighbours.
The McDonalds is based in the former Kashmiri Aroma restaurant.
Planning permission was not needed for the building to re-open as a McDonalds, as it would fall into the same planning use as the former curry house.
But a planning application was submitted for alterations to the building, including building a rear extension, alterations to car parking and installing an underground waste water treatment tank at the site.
Over 600 people had objected raising concerns including claims the new chain will cause traffic problems, promote unhealthy eating and attract a “different type of clientele” to the area.
Others argued the council should not be supporting multinational businesses.
But planning officers told a planning panel that the bulk of these objections were critical of the idea of a McDonald’s opening in the area – not of the specific application.
At the planning panel meeting in November 2023 Councillor Steve Goodwill, chair of Burley Parish Council, said:
“We welcome new businesses into the area, but we have to benefit the benefits with the risks.
“Our concern is about the potential for increased traffic. McDonald’s would open 15 hours a day, whereas the previous restaurant only opened in the evening.”
The plan was approved at that meeting.
The application to open at 6:30am, by Pritpal Singh, includes noise reports and a lighting report. It says:
“The submitted Noise Technical Note and Lighting letter confirm that the proposal would not result in any material adverse impact on neighbouring residential amenity, particularly in the context of existing background noise levels.
“Existing noise and lighting mitigation measures will remain unchanged, and the proposal would not give rise to unacceptable pollution impacts.”
Referring to the impact of lights in the restaurant, the application adds:
“The changes in opening hours will not result in the external lighting impacting the adjacent residential properties. The boundary lighting and obtrusive lighting controls remain the same.”
A decision on the application is expected in November.
