A new Climate Café is being held in Ilkley tonight, offering people a space to talk openly about their feelings surrounding climate change and the ecological crisis.
The Climate Café Listening Circle will take place at Ilkley Quaker Meeting House on Queen's Road from 7pm until 8.30pm today (Monday 21st September).
Organised by members of Climate Action Ilkley, the free session is aimed at anyone aged 18 or over who would like an opportunity to discuss emotions including fear, anger, sadness, uncertainty and hope around climate change.
Rather than featuring presentations or guest speakers, the 90-minute session will follow a structured listening format designed to give everyone an opportunity to speak and be heard.
Organisers describe it as an "advice-free zone", with the focus instead on listening to others and recognising that people are not alone in their concerns.
The session will be facilitated by psychotherapist Kate Graham and clinical and community psychologist Sarah Bradley, who are both members of Climate Action Ilkley.
The format is based on a model developed by the Climate Psychology Alliance.
Refreshments and cake will also be provided during the evening.
Although the event is taking place at the Quaker Meeting House, organisers have stressed that there is no religious aspect to the session.
They said recent experiences of heat and wildfires have brought concerns around climate change closer to home and believe providing opportunities for people to talk about the emotions involved can help.
The Climate Café is free to attend, although places are limited and advance booking is required.
