Poetry Month: The Grove Bookshop's commitment to the National Year of Reading 2026

The Grove Bookshop has designated the month of July as Poetry Month

As part of its commitment to 'going all in' for the National Year of Reading 2026, The Grove Bookshop in Ilkley has designated the month of July as Poetry Month.

The space reserved for the bookshops Indie Publisher of the Month will be shared by Carcanet and Faber Poetry, and the shop will be hosting events with award-winning poet Emma Conally-Barklem on Thursday 9th July at 7pm, with her collection The High Flight – 50 Poems Inspired by Emily Bronte’s Hawk, and typewriter poet Molly Ovenden, who will be creating bespoke typed poems for customers on Friday 31st July.

Local poet Jaz Oldham will also be offering an erasure poetry session on Sunday 26th July from 3pm to 4.15pm.

The Grove Bookshop's biggest project is the social media campaign with the hashtag #justonepoem, featuring a different poet or author each day, highlighting a poem which means a lot to them. Some will read their own work, others will pay tribute to other poets, and booksellers at The Grove Bookshop will also be taking part.

Bookshop manager Mike Sansbury said:

"The poetry scene in Ilkley, Yorkshire and beyond is vibrant and exciting, and many of our featured poets have a local connection. We would like to spread the campaign as widely as possible and we would encourage anyone who has a favourite, shortish poem to post it on Instagram, tagging in The Grove Bookshop and using the hashtag #justonepoem.

“People often have reservations about poetry, professing to have no interest, to find it difficult or irrelevant, but we think that nearly everyone will have some piece of poetry that moves them; it might be a memory from childhood, a song lyric, or just a poem which strikes a chord, sparks a memory or sums up some aspect of their life.

"That’s why this July we will be showcasing poets and poems of all kinds, and we’d love you to join in with us!"
