The Ukrainian community in Ilkley gathered at the Clark Foley Community Hub last month to celebrate Ukrainian Independence Day
The vibrant and heartfelt event showcased the rich cultural heritage of Ukraine, the celebration was marked by traditional Ukrainian food, music, dance, and an impressive display of arts and crafts.
The event, expertly organized by Larisa Korol, highlighted the talents of Ukrainian artists, some with international acclaim. Notably, the exhibition featured works by talented artists Natalia Revoniuk, Olha Sun-Vaskovska, Natalka Folyovchuk, Olha Zhydetska, and sculptor Viktoria Chichinadze. Their contributions brought the essence of Ukraine’s cultural and historical depth to life.
Organiser Larisa Korol said:
Throughout the day, visitors enjoyed traditional Ukrainian workshops led by Tetiana Pundieva, Natalia Morozova, Julia Bespalova, Olha Zhydetska and Iryna Zhydetska, offering hands-on experiences in Ukrainian crafts. The atmosphere was warm and inviting, with children performing poems, singing Ukrainian songs, and demonstrating traditional dances. The event truly embodied the resilience and creativity of the Ukrainian people.
“This year’s celebration was particularly significant, as it also served as a reminder of the ongoing struggles in Ukraine. Over £1000 was raised through donations, all of which will be sent to support those in need in Ukraine. The event underscored the unity and strength of the Ukrainian community in Ilkley and their connection to our homeland.
“Special thanks go out to the event’s host, Natalia Revoniuk, the dedicated artists and volunteers, including Tatiana Matiusha and Iryna Shyras, who treated all the guests to Ukrainian pastries. The event concluded with a packed hall, filled with joy and hope for a peaceful future.
“This celebration marks the third Independence Day event in Ilkley, and the warmth and support from the local community have been overwhelming. The Ukrainian community is deeply grateful for the kindness and solidarity shown by their Yorkshire neighbours, as we continue to share our culture and stories.”
