On Sunday 29 March, Two Rivers Concert Band will hold their Spring Concert, under the expert baton of their musical director, Gregory Moor.
The concert starts at 3pm, doors open at 2:30, at Ilkley Baptist Church on Kings Road in Ilkley.
The Spring Concert will include a varied programme of music reflecting the past, present and future. Some pieces are inspired by our British folksongs and landscape, while others represent places much further afield... as a spokesperson explains:
“Our concert begins, a long time ago in a galaxy far, far away, with John Williams’s dramatic music for the Star Wars film franchise. Closer to home, we find two of Percy Grainger’s quintessentially British classics, Irish Tune from County Derry, and the spritely Shepherds’ Hey. Taking a jump forward in time, we play a selection of music from the blockbuster computer game, Minecraft, before our first half finishes as it started, far from home, as we journey Over the Rainbow for a selection from The Wizard of Oz.
“We start our second half with a hike across the North York Moors, the inspiration for Gustav Holst A Moorside Suite. Written as a brass band test piece in the 1920s, the suite showcases the bands ensemble and melodic playing. Then we’re off Stateside with tunes from three Legends of Jazz (Miles Davis, Duke Ellington and Thelonius Monk), followed by a harmonious contrast as we’d Like to Teach the World to Sing! We finish our concert in the 1880s, over in Paris, with Andrew Lloyd Webber’s acclaimed musical, Phantom of the Opera.”
Tickets cost just £10 (free for those aged 16 and under) and are available from Grove Bookshop in Ilkley, online at www.tworiversbands.org.uk or can be bought on the door.
Admission includes a programme, plus an interval drink and plentiful homemade cakes baked by Band members. There will also be a collection in aid of The Swan Song Project. This small Leeds based charity gives people planning the end stages of their lives and those surrounding them the opportunity to write and record their own original song. This musical celebration of life brings comfort and joy, leaving a legacy that helps loved-ones as they deal with bereavement.
